Which Countries Ask for Proof of Onward Travel in 2026?

Yes, and the list is longer than most travellers expect. Thailand, Indonesia, Costa Rica, the United States and a long tail of visa-on-arrival destinations all want evidence that you are leaving again, and in practice it is the check-in agent who asks first, not the immigration officer. Here is who asks, what they accept, and where a reservation is not enough.

Which countries ask for proof of onward travel in 2026?

There is no single global list, because the rule lives in each country's entry conditions rather than in one treaty. What follows are the requirements that are written down by an official source, not the ones people repeat in forums.

Beyond that table, plenty of Caribbean, Central American and Southeast Asian destinations attach the same condition to visa-free entry. If you are flying somewhere on a visa exemption rather than a stamped visa, assume the condition applies and check the destination's own government page before you pack.

What counts as proof of onward travel?

The document has to show you, your route, your dates and a booking reference the agent can look up. A screenshot of a search result does not do that. Neither does a hold that has already expired.

What you need:

• A flight reservation under a live PNR, showing your name exactly as it appears in your passport
• A departure date inside the stay you are asking for, not after it
• A route that leaves the country you are entering, to anywhere the destination accepts
• A booking reference that can be checked in Amadeus, Sabre or Travelport
• A printed copy, because airport wifi fails at the worst moment and some officers will not touch your phone
• Your visa or entry permission for the onward country, where one is needed to board that second leg

Why does the airline check before the country does?

Because the airline pays if it gets this wrong. Carriers are fined and made to fly inadmissible passengers home, so the desk applies the destination's rule on the destination's behalf.

The tool they use is Timatic, IATA's database of passport, visa and health requirements. IATA says it is fed by more than 2,000 government and airline officials and updated around 70 times a day, and that it is used to check over 700 million passengers' documents a year.

This is why a rule that looks discretionary on a government website can feel absolute at check-in. The agent is reading a rule in a system, not making a judgement call about you.

Does a flight reservation work, or do I need a paid ticket?

It depends on the wording, and this is where honest advice matters more than a sales pitch. Where the requirement is phrased as evidence of onward travel or travel arrangements, a reservation answers it. Where the requirement is phrased as a ticket, a reservation is not a substitute.

The Schengen case is the clearest example of the first kind. Article 14 of the Visa Code asks for documents covering means of transport and return. It does not ask you to buy a fare before anyone has decided on your application.

The US Visa Waiver Programme is the second kind. The Department of State states that travellers arriving by air or sea under the programme must hold a return or onward ticket. If an airline enforces that as a purchased ticket at the gate, a held reservation will not stand in for it, and we would rather say so than let you find out at the counter.

Indonesia's visa on arrival sits in the same category on paper, since immigration publishes it as a return ticket or a ticket onward to another country. Thailand's wording is softer, asking for evidence of onward or return travel, and the FCDO warns that travellers have been refused entry for failing to produce it.

So read the exact words on the official page for your destination. Ticket means ticket. Evidence, proof or arrangements is a wider door, and that is the door a verified onward reservation is built for.

Does my nationality change the answer?

More than the destination does, in a lot of cases. A UAE resident on an Emirati passport and a UAE resident on an Indian or Pakistani passport are reading two different rulebooks for the same flight.

Visa nationals hit the onward travel condition more often, because it is usually bolted onto visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry rather than onto a stamped visa. Transit is the sharpest version. The UK's Transit Without Visa scheme only works for visa nationals who hold a confirmed onward flight within the published window and the right documents for the final destination.

Your residence visa also matters on the way home. Airlines want to see that you can re-enter the UAE, so keep your Emirates ID and residence visa to hand alongside the onward document.

Why do travellers get stopped over this?

The refusals we hear about are boring and avoidable. Almost none of them are about the document being a reservation rather than a purchase.

• The hold expired. A reservation made three weeks before an appointment can lapse before anyone opens the file. Match the validity to the date the document is actually read.
• The name does not match. Middle names dropped, surname and given name swapped, a spelling from an old passport. The agent needs the passport and the booking to agree.
• The dates contradict the rest of the application. An onward flight after the visa's stay period, or a return that clashes with the hotel booking, reads as carelessness.
• The onward country needs its own visa. An onward leg you cannot legally board is not proof of anything.
• Relying on Manage Booking. Many airlines never show an unpaid hold on their own website. The reliable check is the GDS lookup, and it is worth knowing that before you try to prove the booking on your phone at a desk.
• Treating the document as the case. Applications turn on funds, ties and consistency. A reservation is one supporting document in a file, and no document obliges an officer to admit you.

What does proof of onward travel cost?
