UK ETA for UAE Residents: Who Needs One and Who Still Needs a Visa
Your passport decides this, not your UAE residence visa. Emirati passport holders need a UK ETA, £20, valid two years or until the passport expires. UAE residents on Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian or Bangladeshi passports cannot get an ETA at all and still need a UK Standard Visitor visa, £135, decided in around three weeks.

Your passport decides this, not your UAE residence visa. If you hold an Emirati passport you need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation, and if you live in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah on a residence visa but carry an Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian or Bangladeshi passport, you cannot get an ETA at all and still need a full UK Standard Visitor visa. Getting this wrong is the difference between flying and being turned away at the check-in desk.
Do UAE residents need a UK ETA or a UK visa?
It comes down to one question: is your nationality on the UK's visa-exempt list? The UAE is. India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Egypt and Bangladesh are not, and GOV.UK's eligibility list says plainly that other nationalities cannot get an ETA and should check whether they need a visa instead.
An Emirates ID, a ten-year Golden Visa or twenty years of living in Sharjah makes no difference to this. The UK reads the passport you present at the gate. That is the whole rule, and most of the confusion online comes from articles that say "UAE residents need an ETA" when they mean "Emirati nationals need an ETA".

| ETA fee | £20, and non-refundable once you apply | GOV.UK, Apply for an ETA |
| ETA validity | 2 years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first | GOV.UK, Apply for an ETA |

| When it became compulsory | 25 February 2026. Carriers check before you board. | GOV.UK news, ETA enforcement |

| Visitor visa decision time | 3 weeks as standard, applying from outside the UK | GOV.UK, visa decision waiting times |
Which are you, visa-exempt or visa-required?
Find the passport in your hand, not the visa in it. This covers the passports most commonly held by UAE residents, but the list on GOV.UK is the one that counts, so check yours there before you pay for anything.
| Passport you hold | What the UK wants | Your next step |
|---|---|---|
| United Arab Emirates | ETA | Apply in the UK ETA app, £20, usually decided fast |
| India | Standard Visitor visa | Full application, biometrics, £135 |
| Pakistan | Standard Visitor visa | Full application, biometrics, £135 |
| Philippines | Standard Visitor visa | Full application, biometrics, £135 |
| Egypt | Standard Visitor visa | Full application, biometrics, £135 |
| Bangladesh | Standard Visitor visa | Full application, biometrics, £135 |
| British or Irish | Neither | Travel on your British or Irish passport |
If your nationality is not in that table, run it through the UK's own visa checking tool. It asks for your nationality first, which tells you everything about how the system thinks.

What is a UK ETA and what does it cost?
An ETA is digital permission to travel, linked electronically to your passport. It is not a visa and it is not a stamp. The Home Office is blunt about the limit of it: an ETA authorises a person to travel to the UK, and Border Force still makes the decision at the desk when you land.
It costs £20 and lasts two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first, according to GOV.UK. Within that window you can come and go as often as you like, staying up to six months at a time.
One trap for UAE residents: if your Emirati passport has eighteen months left on it, your ETA dies with the passport. Renew the passport first, then buy the ETA, or you are paying £20 twice.
How do you apply for a UK ETA from the UAE?
The quickest route is the UK ETA app on the App Store or Google Play, with the GOV.UK website as the alternative. You need your passport, an email address, a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, and a photo of your face that meets the official standard.
Most people get an automatic decision within minutes through the app, but the Home Office still advises applying at least three working days ahead because some applications get pulled for a closer look. Do it the week before you fly, not the night before.
Since 25 February 2026 there is no grace period left. The Home Office announcement confirmed carriers check passengers before they travel, and 85 nationalities can no longer legally board without one.
What does a UK Standard Visitor visa need instead?
If you are visa-required, the ETA app is irrelevant to you. You are filing a Standard Visitor visa application, paying £135 for a visit of up to six months, giving biometrics at a visa application centre in the UAE, and waiting around three weeks for a decision.
GOV.UK sets out what you have to be able to show for a Standard Visitor visa: that you will leave the UK at the end of your visit, that you can support yourself and any dependants during the trip, that you can pay for your return or onward journey, and that you are not using repeat visits to live in the UK by the back door.
What goes in the file
- A passport valid for the whole of your intended stay
- Your UAE residence visa and Emirates ID, showing where you are settled and why you go home
- Evidence of your travel arrangements, meaning dates, route and a booking reference the caseworker can read
- Accommodation details for the nights you will be in the UK
- Bank statements covering the trip, usually the last three to six months
- An employment letter or trade licence showing your income and your ties to the UAE
- An invitation letter, if you are staying with family or attending an event
That third line is where most people get stuck. Buying a long-haul fare before a decision is a lot of money to put at risk, which is why a held reservation exists. A genuine flight reservation puts the dates and the route on paper under a live PNR the caseworker can verify, without paying the fare. It is a real booking, not a forged document, and that distinction is the whole point.
What goes wrong when you turn up with an ETA and needed a visa?
You do not get as far as the UK. Since enforcement began, airlines check the passenger's travel permission before boarding, so the failure happens at the check-in desk in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, hours before wheels up.
The practical damage is worse than the wasted £20. You lose the fare, because a no-show on a cheap ticket rarely refunds. You lose the hotel if it is past the cancellation window. And you now have to file a visitor visa application and wait three weeks, which usually means the wedding, the conference or the graduation happens without you.
The common ways people end up in that queue are all avoidable:
- Reading "UAE residents need an ETA" and assuming residence is the qualifier rather than nationality
- Holding a Golden Visa and treating it as a status the UK recognises, which it does not
- Travelling as a family where one person is Emirati and the others are not, and applying for everyone the same way
- Holding two passports and applying for the ETA on the wrong one, then travelling on the other
- Leaving it to the airport, where even a visa-exempt passenger with no ETA is simply refused boarding
Why do UK visitor visa applications get refused?
Refusals almost never turn on a missing form. They turn on the caseworker not believing you will go home, or not believing the trip adds up financially. Those are the two things Appendix V asks them to weigh.
The avoidable causes look like this. Bank statements with a large deposit that landed a week before you applied and has no explanation. A stated purpose that does not match the dates, such as a five-day conference booked as a three-week trip. Weak ties to the UAE, for instance a residence visa expiring two months after you travel with no employment letter to balance it. And a travel plan described in words with nothing behind it, no dates, no route, no reference number.
No document fixes an unconvincing application, and nobody can promise you an outcome. What you can control is that every piece of paper tells the same story: the same dates, the same route, the same purpose, all the way through the file.
What does the whole thing cost?
Two separate columns here, and they should never be confused. The first is what the UK government charges. The second is what we charge for the documents that go into the file.
| Item | Cost | Whose fee |
|---|---|---|
| UK ETA, for visa-exempt passports | £20, non-refundable | UK government |
| UK Standard Visitor visa, up to 6 months | £135 | UK government |
| Flight reservation, valid 2 days | AED 49 per traveller | The Dummy Ticket AE |
| Flight reservation, valid 7 days | AED 69 per traveller | The Dummy Ticket AE |
| Flight reservation, valid 14 days | AED 79 per traveller | The Dummy Ticket AE |
| Travel insurance, AXA issued | from AED 30 | The Dummy Ticket AE |
Visa application centres in the UAE charge their own service and optional fees on top of the £135, and those change, so take the figure from the centre when you book the appointment rather than from any article. Our tier price buys how long the reservation stays live, not the route, so a return costs the same as a one way. You can book a reservation in a few minutes and it reaches your inbox in 10 to 15 minutes, any hour of the day.

Whichever route applies, your travel plan needs to be on paper
An ETA holder proving onward travel at the desk and a visitor visa applicant proving travel arrangements in the file need the same thing: a real reservation with a live PNR, not a screenshot. Book a flight reservation from AED 49 and it lands in your inbox in 10 to 15 minutes. We sell the document that goes into the application. Filing the application itself is still yours to do.
