Dummy Ticket, Onward Ticket or Flight Itinerary: Which Do You Actually Need?

The Short Answer

They are the same document. A dummy ticket, an onward ticket and a flight itinerary are all one genuine airline reservation held under a live PNR that can be looked up in Amadeus, Sabre or Travelport. Only the audience changes: a consulate reading your visa file, a check-in agent at the desk, or a border officer. Pick the name that matches who is asking.

Dummy Ticket, Onward Ticket or Flight Itinerary: Which Do You Actually Need?

They are the same document. A dummy ticket, an onward ticket and a flight itinerary all describe one genuine airline reservation held under a live PNR, and the only thing that really changes is who reads it. Work out whether your reader is a consulate, a check-in agent or a border officer, and the naming question answers itself.

Is a dummy ticket different from an onward ticket or a flight itinerary?

No. Three names, one product. The travel industry grew three labels because three different people ask for the same piece of paper in three different situations, and search engines then kept all three alive.

What sits underneath every one of them is a booking made in a global distribution system. The seat is held, the fare is not paid, and the booking reference can be looked up in Amadeus, Sabre or Travelport for as long as the hold runs.

That last point is the one to hold on to. It is not a mock-up, not an edited PDF and not a forgery. It is a real reservation that has not been paid for, which is a completely different thing from a fake one.

At a glance

Name Who reads it Where you show it What it has to prove
Dummy ticket A visa officer at a consulate or a visa centre such as VFS Global or BLS International Inside your application file, weeks before you fly That you have a travel plan with dates and a route, matching the cover letter and the insurance. The EU Visa Code asks for supporting documents about the journey, not a purchased fare
Onward ticket A check-in agent at the airport, working from the airline's document rules At the desk, minutes before boarding That you have a way out of the destination country inside the stay you are allowed. Airlines carry the liability if they board you wrongly, so they check
Flight itinerary An immigration officer at the border, or anyone who wants to read the booking properly On arrival, on a phone or on paper Route, dates, passenger name and booking reference in the format an airline actually issues, so it can be verified rather than eyeballed

Read the table by column, not by row. You are not choosing a product. You are identifying which of the three readers you are about to meet.

What does the document actually need to contain?

Whatever you call it, the same things make it usable. Run through this before you submit anything.

  • A live PNR, six characters, that resolves in a GDS while the reader is looking at it
  • Your full name exactly as it is printed in the machine readable zone of your passport
  • An operating airline and a flight number that genuinely exists on that route and date
  • Dates that sit inside the stay you are asking for, and inside your insurance cover
  • A route that matches the story the rest of your file tells
  • Standard airline itinerary formatting, which is what a flight itinerary under a live PNR gives you
  • Enough validity left on the day it is read, not the day you bought it

Validity is the quiet one. A reservation that lapsed the day before an appointment is worth nothing, however correct it was when it landed in your inbox.

Which one do I need for a visa application?

You need the version aimed at a consulate, which is the one people search for as a dummy ticket. Schengen practice is the clearest example, because the requirement is written down. Article 14 of the EU Visa Code sets out the supporting documents an applicant has to produce about the purpose and conditions of the journey, and a reservation answers it (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, EUR-Lex).

Some missions say so outright. The German mission in Singapore lists "a flight reservation or printout of your flight itinerary" and adds, in capitals, that no booked ticket is needed (German Federal Foreign Office). The same page sets travel health insurance at EUR 30,000 for medical expenses and repatriation, which is the other half of a Schengen file.

The UK frames it differently. A Standard Visitor has to satisfy the decision maker that they are a genuine visitor who will leave at the end of the visit, and has to hold funds covering the return or onward journey (GOV.UK). A reservation supports that picture. It does not replace the bank statements.

The United States is further along the same line. A visitor visa applicant qualifies on ties to a residence abroad rather than on paperwork about the trip, and the State Department says evidence of employment and family ties may be enough to show the purpose of the trip and the intent to return (U.S. Department of State). Bring an itinerary by all means. Do not expect it to carry the interview.

If your file is a Schengen one, a reservation prepared for a Schengen application is the shape you want, dated to cover the exact stay you are requesting.

Which one do I need for airline check-in?

The onward version, and you need it live at the moment the agent looks. This is the situation with the shortest fuse, because the check-in desk is not a place where anything gets explained.

The agent is not applying their own judgement. Airlines are responsible for making sure every passenger holds the documents their destination requires, and the industry tool behind that check is IATA Timatic, which handles more than 700 million document checks a year inside airline check-in systems (IATA). If Timatic says the route needs proof of onward travel, the agent needs to see something.

That is what proof of onward travel is for: a held seat out of the country, inside the permitted stay, verifiable in a GDS.

One honest limit. A handful of carriers and routes ask for a paid onward ticket, and some check-in systems will not accept an unpaid hold at all. A reservation is not a substitute there. If you are flying one of those routes, buy the fare or buy a cheap genuine ticket out. Check the airline's own conditions of carriage before you commit, because this varies by carrier and by destination and it is not something to discover at the desk.

Which one do I need at the border?

The itinerary version, readable on a phone, with the booking reference visible. Border officers are running a shorter check than a consulate but a broader one than an airline.

The EU's own guidance for non-EU nationals says border officials may ask for supporting documents including "an invitation letter, proof of lodging, return or round-trip ticket" (Your Europe, European Commission). Note the wording. A return or round-trip ticket sits alongside a hotel booking as one item in a set, not as the whole test.

The UAE works the same way from the other direction. The official government platform lists, among the conditions for a multiple entry tourist visa, "a ticket showing continuing or return journey from the UAE" (The Official Portal of the UAE Government). If you are bringing family in on a visit visa, that clause is the one that catches people.

Your nationality changes how hard any of this bites. A UAE resident on an Indian, Pakistani or Nigerian passport is asked for more, and asked more often, than an Emirati or a British passport holder on the same flight. Plan for the check you will actually get, not the one your colleague got.

Where do people get this wrong?

Five mistakes account for nearly all of it, and every one of them is avoidable in ten minutes.

Buying the wrong validity. The tier you pick buys how long the reservation stays live, not how far you fly. A two day hold bought a fortnight before a VFS appointment is dead by the time anyone opens the file.

Mismatched dates. The reservation says the 4th, the hotel booking says the 6th, the cover letter says the first week of March. A visa officer reads all three on one desk. Inconsistency is a refusal reason in its own right, and it is the single easiest one to remove.

Name spelled the friendly way. "Mo Khan" on the reservation and "MOHAMMED IMRAN KHAN" in the passport is a problem at check-in, not a rounding error.

Assuming the airline's website will show it. Some carriers display an unpaid hold under Manage Booking. Many never do, because commercially the booking is not theirs yet. The GDS lookup is the reliable check, and an agent who cannot find it on the airline site has not found a fake, only an unpaid one. Our FAQ page covers verification, reissues and refunds in more detail.

Treating it as a paid ticket. It is proof of a plan. Present it as what it is. Where a route demands a purchased onward fare, say so to yourself early and buy one, rather than hoping a held onward reservation will pass a system that is built to reject it.

And one thing that is not a mistake, because people worry about it constantly: using a reservation instead of a paid ticket is not deception. The consulate asked for evidence of travel arrangements. A held booking is a travel arrangement. Nobody is claiming the fare is paid.

What does it cost and how long does it stay live?

Our pricing is validity based. One way and return cost the same, and the route makes no difference, because what you are buying is how long the PNR stays alive.

Tier How long the reservation stays live Price per traveller Best for
2 days 48 hours AED 49 A check-in or border requirement you are meeting tomorrow
7 days One week AED 69 An appointment this week, with room for a reschedule
14 days Two weeks AED 79 A submitted file that may sit in a queue before anyone reads it

There are no embassy or visa centre fees in that table, because none of them are ours. Visa fees are paid to the mission or the centre and are separate from anything you buy here.

Delivery is 10 to 15 minutes after payment, at any hour. If an appointment moves, we reissue with the new dates at no charge, which is usually cheaper than buying a longer tier defensively.

So which one should I buy?

The same one, every time. Choose the validity that covers the day your reader looks at it, and use the name that matches the situation when you talk about it.

Going into a visa file, buy enough validity to survive the queue. Flying tomorrow and worried about the desk, take an onward reservation and check whether your carrier demands a paid fare. Being asked for a booking reference in a readable format, take the itinerary format.

Nothing on this page changes a decision that turns on funds, ties or consistency. A reservation removes one specific objection: that your travel plan is not on paper. That is worth AED 49. It is not worth pretending it is more.

Still not sure which one you need?

It is one document either way, so you cannot pick the wrong one. Book a reservation from AED 49, choose the validity that covers the day someone reads it, and it lands in your inbox in 10 to 15 minutes. Book a verifiable flight reservation, or go straight to proof of onward travel if you are flying tomorrow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Both are one genuine airline reservation held under a live PNR with the fare unpaid. The word dummy is used when a consulate reads it inside a visa file, and onward when a check-in agent or border officer reads it on the day you fly.
A reservation is a real booking made in an airline system, not a forged or edited document. Consulates ask for evidence of travel arrangements rather than a purchased fare, and a held PNR is a travel arrangement. Never present it as a paid ticket.
Usually, if the seat is held under a live PNR inside your permitted stay. Some carriers and routes demand a paid onward ticket, and their check-in systems reject an unpaid hold. Check the airline conditions of carriage before you fly, not at the desk.
As long as the tier you buy. Ours run 2 days at AED 49, 7 days at AED 69 and 14 days at AED 79 per traveller. What matters is that it is still live on the day someone reads it, not the day you paid for it.
Some carriers display an unpaid hold under Manage Booking and many never do, because the booking is not commercially theirs until the fare is paid. The reliable check is the PNR lookup in Amadeus, Sabre or Travelport, which is what officials use.
